Frosty Treat

I was digging through a box recently that contained stuff I had put aside to preserve after my Father's death, when I came across this gem of a photo.

This was the sign in front of my Father's fast food restaurant in Sioux Falls South Dakota. He purchased the place in 1964, changed the name to Taco Rita in 1980, and then sold it off in the late 1980's.

Here is an ad cut from the Sioux Falls Argus Leader announcing the name change.

This picture was taken approximately in 1970. There was a parade in Downtown Sioux Falls, and this was the Frosty Treat hot dog float.

Pictured here are some of the Frosty Treat employees who built the float. That's me hanging on Mike Olowski, and to his right is Sherry. The two of them would later marry, and become my first wedding experience. I can still remember that volkswagon bug that Mike and Sherry drove around in, it was legendary in the eyes of my brothers and myself. I think I still like volkswagons to this day because of it.

This is a shot of the entire family, with me on the left in front of my Mom.

I'm not sure whos idea it was for the matching sweaters that day, but man did we make a statement! Those sweaters I've been told were made for us by my Aunt Inga from Denmark.

This is how the place looked when my Dad first purchased it, notice the original sign was but a fraction of the later version.

Here is a view of the front area where all of the ice cream dishes (ice cream cones, malts, banana splits, sundaes, etc) were served.

This is the back area where the burgers and fries were cooked, that's Millie Gruber running the grill.

A search of the web for anything "Frosty Treat" just to see if there was anything out there, turned up this. Not quite what I expected, but if you knew my Dad, it makes perfect sense :)

My Dad had a business prior to Frosty Treat, it was called Don's Standard Service. Here it is in 1960. I never got to see this one, since he sold it before I was born. The Piggly Wiggly next door is now a Pizza Inn. That funny little car on the left, that was my Mom's.

That's my Dad on the left.

National Guard Send Off

Sometimes pictures tell a story better than words ever could. Soldiers from MClean County were leaving for Iraq, and the city responded with an outpouring of well wishes. Good Luck guys, we look forward to your safe return.

Thanksgiving in Iowa

What a great start for the 2006 Holiday season. We traveled to Spirit Lake, IA to spend time with Family and friends, many of whom we had not seen for several years.

Long walks were a good way to exercise off the extra pounds acquired from mountains of turkey and stuffing and potatoes...

Nanobots Hard at Work

The Prairieland Nanobots continue to work hard at mastering the missions in this years First Lego League challenge.

All work and no play makes Jack... shhhhhh, don't tell anybody about the race through the halls!

Well, it was mostly work. The kids seem to have mastered the number one rule layed out by Coach Dave, "have fun".

Nanobots Participate in Scrimmage

The Prairieland Nanobots and 28 other central Illinois teams participated in a First Lego League (FLL) robotics scrimmage on Saturday November 4th. The event was held in the gymnasium of Peoria's Lincoln High School, and was the first opportunity for these teams to showcase the robots they've designed for this years robotics challenge.

Below are some photos of the Nanobots at the scrimmage. Enjoy!

The Nanobots enjoy a laugh while repairing their robot after it split in two when it became entangled with the space elevator during one of the 3 runs.

Overall things went very well. The Nanobots scored a high of 91 on the last run, which more than tripled the 30 points scored on the first run. We learned alot from our own robot, and I think we may have even picked up some ideas from the other teams. We'll start to work on those ideas next week, and hopefully we'll be ready for the Regional competition coming up in four weeks.
